Project 3: InDesign Newspaper Clone

This was my second favorite project, mostly because InDesign is the Adobe program I was most comfortable with while creating it. It was nice to be able to go into the program and know where everything was, and know how to navigate windows that I don’t typically use when creating something in InDesign.

I think the most challenging parts of this project were copying a layout, rather than making my own design, and using a different workspace than what I am used to. My experience with InDesign was mostly coming up with my own layouts, then inputting art/photos and text that my writers and photographers had already created. I am used to messing around with the layout without having to follow a strict guideline besides folio and headline placement. This time, I found it challenging to directly copy an existing layout, when I usually would move things around to be more visually appealing or use white space differently. It was fun, though, because it got me thinking about how a newspaper layout would look as opposed to a magazine layout, and how certain stories would be put on a front page instead of an individual spread. As for the workspace, I typically use Essentials or Essentials (Classic), sometimes Book. This time, I pulled up the Advanced workspace because I couldn’t find the transparency slider on any of the three I usually use, and I didn’t really feel like going back to the workspaces I typically use. This was a fun challenge because I got to navigate a new workspace and have easier access to windows that I typically have to go into the Windows tab for.

Something I found enlightening about this project was going into Adobe fonts to find fonts that were as close to the existing ones as possible. I’ve done this before but the search engine wasn’t particularly great at the time, and it’s improved a lot since. I felt I was able to more accurately represent the typefaces in this design versus the flyer we cloned in class.

In creating this newspaper clone, I used my own photos in areas where the original newspaper had photos, and used similar fonts when I could not find the original ones. I had the original newspaper in a layer beneath the elements I was creating, at a lower opacity so I could see my work. I used my own colors, headlines, and names as well.
